Computerized decision support systems play a substantial role in today's digital economy. Because cognitive load is a major factor in decision making, identifying cognitive load automatically is a major step toward developing advanced decision tools that can respond to user needs at a personalized level. This talk provides an overview of an eye tracking cognitive load detection system which can reliably predicted increased task demand from users' eye movements.

Dr. Bajracharya is a practicing physician board certified in Internal Medicine and Clinical Informatics. He provides clinical care as a hospitalist physician in addition to doing quality and research informatics work at University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, MA. He is a faculty in the Divisions of Hospital Medicine and Clinical Informatics at University of Massachusetts Medical Center, and assistant professor of medicine at University of Massachusetts Medical School. Dr. Bajracharya obtained his medical degree from Manipal College of Medical Sciences in Nepal and completed his residency training in internal medicine from Steward Carney Hospital in Boston, MA. He completed his fellowship training in clinical informatics from Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, MA. Dr Bajracharya’s clinical and research interests include optimizing use of information technology to improve care delivery and evaluating its role in improving patient and provider engagement. His work includes use of design thinking, telemedicine and patient portal to improve patient engagement and access to care. He has developed and published on applications for patients to provide their medical history through patient portal integrated with electronic health record. He is also a co-founder of PrathamHealth, a healthcare company that delivers quality medical care to patients in Nepal leveraging information technology including telemedicine through its network of physicians, clinics, hospitals, labs and pharmacies in Nepal and physicians in the United States.

Albert Simeoni

Professor Albert Simeoni is the Department Head of Fire Protection Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Physics and Applications from the University of Corsica in France (1994), a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the university of Aix-Marseille in France (1996), and a Ph.D. in Physics, from the University of Corsica in France (2000). He is an internationally recognized expert in fire and wildland fire and fire science with over 120 journal papers, conference papers, and book chapters. He has more than 20 years of experience developing experimental, analytical, and numerical techniques to better understand fire dynamics and to predict fire and wildland fire behavior. Before joining WPI, he held academic leadership positions in fire research in the UK (university of Edinburgh) and in France (university of Corsica). He has also experience as a consultant in fire science in the US and has spent over 10 years volunteering and working as a firefighter in France. Starting as a volunteer firefighter, he ultimately led all aspects of fire, wildland fire, and rescue operations, in the capacity of Chief of Fire Station. He is Associate Editor of the International Journal of Wildland Fire and the treasurer of the International Association of Wildland Fire.

Prior to Minim, Alec has worked in the field of networking and security at HP, Agilent, Meetinghouse, Cisco, and Elbrys. Alec holds a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University and bachelor's degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Economics from Case Western Reserve University. When he's not developing software, Alec likes to tackle challenging projects with his family at their home in Maine - like building a treehouse and a 16 foot wooden sail boat.

In his role as Director & Global Head of IoT Partner Engineering at Wipro, Calvin Smith and his team combine Wipro IP and services with Partner products and offerings to create differentiated End-to-End solutions designed to maximize customer ROI for specific use cases. Calvin also looks after the external ecosystem for Wipro IoT, covering analyst relations and academic research and engagement. Prior to this role, Calvin spent the better part of the last decade running IoT Strategy and Organic Innovation at Dell EMC. In the Industrial Internet Consortium, Calvin co-chairs the Smart Manufacturing Task Group and the Academic Task Group. Calvin has lived in eight states in the US, as well as in Scotland and Spain; and has traveled to over 50 countries.

Dan is an owner of Fleet Safety Services, Inc., a small business in Worcester, MA that helps companies that operate commercial motor vehicles remain in compliance with various federal regulatory requirements. He is also a member of the Patient and Family Advisory Council, at UMass Memorial Medical Center. He has served on the council since it was founded in April of 2010, and served as the Council's Patient Co-Chair for two years. The PFAC is a volunteer group of mostly patients, and some staff, that advise the hospital from the perspective of the patient. Dan has also represented the PFAC on various committees and workgroups throughout the UMass system. Some examples include a Patient Engagement Integrated Work Group responsible for the patient portal, the hospital's Patient Safety Committee, various LEAN process improvement work groups, etc. He has also served on Health Care for All's state-wide advisory committee for Massachusetts PFACs, and has advocated at the local and national level to promote cardio-vascular care similar to that which he has received at UMass Memorial since his heart attack in 2008.

Dr. Alper completed medical school and his residency in Internal Medicine at UMass where he continues to practice as a hospitalist. As Chief Clinical Informatics Officer, he helped to lead the recent Epic electronic health record replacement at UMass Memorial. HIs focus has been improving physicians', other caregivers', and patients' experience by optimizing these complex systems and leveraging their functionality to deliver outstanding care.

Dr. Hong Yu is an elected Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics. She has joined the Department of Computer Science of the University of Massachusetts at Lowell (UMass-Lowell) since January of 2018. Before joining UMass-Lowell, she was a tenured full professor in the Department of Quantitative Health Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. She obtained her PhD in Biomedical Informatics from Columbia University. She is an internationally known expert in biomedical and health data science and has been on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Biomedical Informatics since 2009. She has chaired or co-chaired several leading computer science and biomedical informatics conferences. She is the Principle Investigator in multiple NIH and HSR&D grants and has authored over 150 peered-reviewed publications in leading computer science and biomedical informatics journals and conference proceedings.

Hugh has over 15 years of insurance experience in the P&C, Life, and Health sectors. He began leading the digital transformation process at MAPFRE Insurance with launch of VERTI in 2017 and has been a member of the MAPFRE Innovation office since 2015. Using Design Thinking strategies, Hugh has brought numerous creative programs and ideas to pilot or production. By building strong relationships inside and outside the MAPFRE organization, Hugh continues to drive the organization to collaborate with both local and global partners.

Javad Norouzi Nia

Javad received his MBA from Iowa State University before starting his Ph.D. In 2018, he joined the WPI Ph.D. program with a concentration in Innovation with UX. Javad’s research focuses on user experience and decision making which investigates people’s cognitive behavior. His research has applications in psychology, marketing, education, and business. His findings can help to understand how people process information and make decisions.

John Rochford

John Rochford is a Program Director and Faculty Member at the Eunice Kennedy Shriver Center of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. John has spent his entire career serving people with disabilities, especially with intellectual disabilities and/or autism. John has led consecutive teams of information-technology professionals to build web applications and online courses, all accessible to people with disabilities. John is a well-known international web accessibility expert. He is an Invited Expert for the Worldwide Web Consortium’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines Working Group, Cognitive and Learning Disabilities Accessibility Taskforce, Low Vision Task Force, and Silver Community Group. He is a co-founder of the Boston Accessibility Group, and a co-organizer of its international accessibility conferences. In 1993, John published the very-first website for people with disabilities and has been building accessible websites ever since. John’s passion is web accessibility for people with cognitive disabilities, especially intellectual disabilities and autism. John researches and develops: artificial-intelligence-driven, mass-scale web-text simplification; a human-curated method to easily and reliably create simplified text; and virtual tutors for online learning. John regularly presents at national and international accessibility and technology conferences about this work.

As Program Manager of User Research for Oracle Cloud, John embeds a data-driven approach to product strategy and user experience. An MBA graduate of WPI, his publications and conference presentations have centered around Augmented Reality, IoT, and the business value of UX. Contributing founder to the WPI UX and Decision Making (UXDM) Consortium, World Usability co-chair for UXPA Boston, and member of organizing committee for UXSym, John is inspired by the creativity and innovation fostered through academic and industry partnerships.

She works as an Engineer at Embr Labs researching and engineering precise temperature sensations delivered by a wearable device called the Embr Wave. Her interests are in the science and application of engineering solutions to the human body to improve quality of life.

Lisa deBettencourt

Lisa has spent her career creating value for organizations, often starting with nothing more than an idea. After decades working in-house, she co-founded Pearl Partners, a consulting firm that works with organizations to identify new ways to engage with their customers and provide value amid rapidly changing expectations. Most recently Lisa was the VP of Design at Confer Health, a consumer biotech startup, building clinical-grade diagnostic testing for use at home. There she established the product strategy and led the design of IoT hardware, software, services, and consumables. Prior to that, she built and grew the Experience Design team at Imprivata, a leading healthcare IT security company. Bose, Ferrari, Autodesk, Walgreens, the Personal Genome Project, and Partners Healthcare are some of the other leading organizations who have entrusted her with creating the right solutions for their customers. Lisa was a contributing author of the book, 'Designing for Emerging Technologies: UX for Genomics, Robotics, and the Internet of Things', published by O’Reilly Media. She teaches about Design Thinking for emerging technologies in the Digital Media Graduate Degree program at Northeastern University. She holds an MS degree in Human Factors in Information Design from Bentley University and an BS in Imaging and Photographic Technology from Rochester Institute of Technology.

Raghvendra Cowlagi

Raghvendra V. Cowlagi is an Assistant Professor in the Aerospace Engineering Program at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, MA since 2013. Previously, he obtained a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Tech in 2011 (advisor: P. Tsiotras); worked as a postdoctoral researcher at MIT (sponsor: E. Frazzoli); and worked as a researcher at Aurora Flight Sciences Corp., Cambridge, MA. His research interests and expertise are in motion planning and control for autonomous aerial vehicles and connected self-driving cars, and specifically in the interactions between sensing and planning subsystems of such autonomous vehicles. He is a recipient of the 2016 AFOSR Young Investigator award, the 2017 Sigma Xi Outstanding Junior Faculty Award, and the Student Best Paper award at the 2009 American Control Conference. He serves as Associate Editor on the IEEE Control Systems Society Conference Editorial Board, as Associate Editor for the Aerospace Science and Technology journal, and is a member of the AIAA Guidance, Navigation, & Control Technical Committee.

Randy Paffenroth

Prof. Randy Paffenroth Associate Professor of Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor of Computer Science, and Associate Professor of Data Science Program Worcester Polytechnic Institute Bio: Dr. Paffenroth graduated from Boston University with degrees in both mathematics and computer science and he was awarded his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Maryland in June of 1999. After attaining his Ph.D., Dr. Paffenroth spent seven years as a Staff Scientist in Applied and Computational Mathematics at the California Institute of Technology. In 2006, he joined Numerica Corporation where he held the position of Computational Scientist and Program Director. Dr. Paffenroth is currently an Associate Professor of Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor of Computer Science, and Associate Professor of Data Science at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. His current technical interests include machine learning, signal processing, large-scale data analytics, compressed sensing, and the interaction between mathematics, computer science, and software engineering, with a focus on applications in cyber-defense.

A concentration on the communicative potential of audio as both a transient and recorded medium motivates my professional and creative development. In my 6+ years as a musician, technician, and production designer in the touring music industry, I have focused on delivering memorable experiences to concertgoers through performance, emotive tools, and audio-visual displays for musicians and technicians to use. Concurrent work in audio engineering and sound design for music and video yields experience in creating attention-grabbing content, tailored to cut through the cacophony of available media. The technical basis of my product development and engineering work was honed via a BS in Electrical Engineering from WPI, further refined though building a diverse set of companies and products, and currently is put to use at Veo Robotics, where we are developing a 3D vision-based safety sensor system for industrial robotics.

Santiago Carvajal

Santiago is currently part of the leadership team of the AR Wearables team at Bose. His main responsibility is the User Experience/Desirability for AR wearable products as well as the Bose AR platform. He has been at Bose for 24 years, in a wide diversity of roles including Product Management, Category Business Management, Research Strategy, and the Front End. Most notably, Santiago was part of the small team responsible for the launch and marketing of the original Wave Radio, he was the product manager for the first Noise Cancelling Headphones sold to consumers, and led the product teams that developed forward looking products like the Videowave Entertainment system (Bose TV), and the SoundTouch WiFi Connected Audio Systems. Most recently, he was closely involved with the transfer of technology from Research to the Business units helping launch new concepts like Bose Frames (Sunglasses) and the Bose AR Audio Augmented Reality Platform. Prior to Bose, Santiago worked in product development as an Engineer developing both hardware and embedded software for Access Control and Time and Attendance Control systems for large enterprises. Santiago has been in product development for over 25 years, both in Engineering and Business. Santiago holds an MBA from Babson College and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Soussan Djamasbi

Soussan Djamasbi is a Professor of Information Systems (IS) and the Director of User Experience and Decision Making (UXDM) research laboratory and UXDM Consortium at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). She is also the Director of WPI’s Innovation with UX (IUX) graduate and certificate degree program. Her research is grounded in innovation with UX focusing on creating social and business value through designing smart and adaptive decision support systems. Djamasbi has served as the Chair of Association for Information Systems (AIS) Special Interest Group in Human Computer Interaction (SIGHCI) and currently she serves as an Advisory Board Member for the SIGHCI.

Stephen Erban, MD, MPH

Dr. Erban attended Medical School and completed an internal medicine residency and a fellowship in general internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He has worked in the field of clinical informatics for over 25 years. His passion is to improve processes of care for patients and providers of care using available health information technology. He is particularly interested in disease management that can be provided via patient portals and remote patient monitoring.

Steven Van Dessel

WPI

Professor Steven Van Dessel is the Program Director of Architectural Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He holds a professional degree in Architecture from the Sint-Lucas Institute in Brussels, Belgium (1990) and a PhD from the University of Florida (2000). His research is in the area of sustainable building design and building technology; with a special focus on the design of smart materials for adaptive building envelop systems. In addition to basic materials research, he works with undergraduate students on projects that deal with the practical challenges of sustainable building design. Examples of such projects include participation in the US Department of Energy Solar Decathlon competitions, which focuses on the design of zero-energy buildings. Such projects are designed to offer opportunities to students that are interested in expanding their knowledge of environmental design, energy modeling tools, new materials, construction detailing, and the practical planning and construction of building projects.

I’m Tom Tullis, a User Experience Research Consultant, Author, and Speaker. I have over 40 years of experience in the human factors, usability, and UX research fields. I’ve worked on things as diverse as the design of NASA’s International Space Station to a wide variety of web sites and apps. In addition to 70+ publications in the field, I’ve co-authored two books: "Measuring the User Experience" and "Beyond the Usability Lab". I teach in the Human Factors in Information Design (HFID) Master's program at Bentley University.

Winston Soboyejo

Wole Soboyejo received a BSc in mechanical engineering from King’s College London in 1985. He then went on to Cambridge University where he obtained his PhD in materials science in 1988. Between 1988 and 1992, he worked as a Research Scientist at the McDonnell Douglas Research Labs. In 1992, he worked briefly at the Edison Welding Institute before joining the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The Ohio State University, where he worked from 1992 until 1999. Between 1997 and 1998, he spent a year as a Visiting Martin Luther King Associate Professor at MIT. He then moved to Princeton University as a Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in 1999. At Princeton, he has served as the Director of the US/Africa Materials Institute (USAMI) and the interdisciplinary undergraduate program in materials science. Soboyejo is the recipient of National Young Investigator Awards from the National Science Foundation and the Office of Naval Research. He is also a recipient of the ASM’s Bradley Stoughton Award for excellence in the teaching of materials science, the Lumley Research Award of The Ohio State University, and Princeton University’s Old School Award for Innovation. Soboyejo is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS), the African Academy of Science, and the Materials Society of Nigeria. He is the author of 3 textbooks and almost 400 peer-reviewed journal papers. He has also edited 20 special issues of journals and conference proceedings. Between 2012 and 2014, Soboyejo served as the President and Provost of the African University of Science and Technology in Abuja, Nigeria. In September of 2016, Soboyejo moved to the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) as the Bernard M. Gordon Dean of Engineering and Professor of Engineering Leadership. He was appointed to serve as the Interim Provost at WPI in September 2018. Soboyejo’s current research focuses on biomaterials, materials for energy and multifunctional materials.
